Foot Health and Ageing: Staying Mobile for Life

Painful feet are not a normal part of getting older. Our feet are often called a 'mirror of health' - here's how to keep them comfortable and mobile, and the changes that mean it's time to see a podiatrist.

As we get older our feet naturally develop more problems - but painful, uncomfortable feet are not something you simply have to put up with. A great deal can be done to improve comfort, relieve pain and keep you on your feet and independent. At Bexley Podiatry we help older patients across the St George area stay mobile, and it often starts with knowing what to look for.

Your feet are a 'mirror of health'

The feet often show the first signs of conditions like diabetes, arthritis and circulation problems. That's why they're sometimes called the mirror of health. Keep an eye out for:

  • Dry skin, cracked heels or brittle nails.
  • Burning, tingling, numbness or a feeling of cold in the feet.
  • Colour changes, swelling, or slow-healing cuts and sores.

Don't ignore new numbness or a wound

Numbness, tingling or any sore that isn't healing should be checked promptly - especially if you have diabetes. Early attention prevents small problems becoming serious ones.

Why feet change as we age

Over the years our feet tend to spread and lose the fatty padding that cushions the sole, so they may need a larger or wider shoe than you're used to. Skin becomes drier and nails thicker and harder to manage. None of this means you have to live with discomfort - most of it responds well to care.

Simple foot care that makes a difference

  • Have your feet measured for shoe size regularly - feet change shape and size with age.
  • Choose shoes with a firm sole, soft upper and a secure fastening to prevent falls.
  • Wash daily in lukewarm (not hot) water and apply a moisturiser - but not between the toes.
  • Cut nails straight across, or have a podiatrist manage thick or hard-to-reach nails.
  • If you have diabetes or reduced circulation, don't go barefoot and check your feet daily.

How a podiatrist helps you stay on your feet

Regular podiatry keeps nails and skin under control, catches problems early, and eases pain from arthritis or pressure. We offer custom orthotics to improve comfort and stability, and thorough diabetic foot assessments to protect at-risk feet. Many older patients are eligible for bulk billing under a Medicare care plan - see our fees and bulk billing page.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for feet to hurt as you get older?

No. Feet change with age, but pain is not something you have to accept. Most causes - arthritis, pressure lesions, nail and skin problems, poor footwear - respond very well to podiatry care.

Can I get bulk-billed podiatry as a senior?

If your GP places you on a Medicare Chronic Disease Management (EPC) care plan, eligible visits can be bulk billed. Bring the referral to your appointment - see our bulk billing page for details.

How often should older adults see a podiatrist?

At least once a year for a general check, and more regularly if you have diabetes, poor circulation, thick nails or difficulty reaching your feet. Regular care prevents small issues becoming serious.
